Merseyside Quiz Leagues

As part of the Smithdown Litfest there are two items that may be of interest to quiz players.  Both are in Liverpool on Saturday 23 September. One is a talk by Tony Nicholson about his career producing TV quiz shows and the second is An Audience with Chris Tarrant.  Both events are ticketed and last about 90 minutes. The Third MQL Jubilee Pairs Competition will be held on Wednesday 13 September and once again at Prescot Cables FC club, courtesy of the Ormskirk QL.  The format of the competition remains the same and is open to any players who took part in the 2022-23 MQL season or who will be playing in the forthcoming season.  There is no charge for entering.  Further details including how to register are available here.

The Fifth MQL Jubilee Buzzer Tournament will be held on Saturday 10 February 2024 in Hoylake.  The event will follow the usual format but we have decided that a team no longer has to represent a League or Area (for example, Liverpool or Wirral).  It could be your regular club side or even just a combination of players, although representative sides remain most welcome. 

For 8 days from Sunday 20 August, MQL teams and players have a priority registration period.  From Monday 28 August any remaining places will be offered to players and teams from beyond the Merseyside Leagues, firstly to teams who have taken part before and after that to any teams.

These Buzzer Tournaments are very popular with teams all around the country and places are usually filled very quickly.  It would be great to see lots of MQL players taking part and so please do take advantage of the priority booking period.  Further details here.

The first playing of the Don Bissett Cup since 2019 took place on Sunday 18 June at the Quiz League of London Open Quiz Festival.  Sadly MQL were unable to defend the Cup which was won by Scotland.  The MQL team of Dag Griffiths, Neil Mackaskill, Jim Eccleson, Mark Kerr and Brian Thompson, lost to Warrington (Dave Tilley, Simon Chilton, Ben Vincent and Sarah Trevarthen) but then beat a team from the Online Quiz League and then Chilterns to win the Plate.  Full results here.
