As you are aware quizzing in the 2020-21 season was cancelled in November. To replace this season’s playing of the traditional Merseyside Challenge Cup the following competition has been arranged.
As it involves some composite teams and is being played in a different format it was decided that the competition was to be known as the Merseyside Online Challenge (MOC) for this year.
The format was adopted when we believed that 17 teams wished to take part. At the last moment this number has dropped to 14, but we have decided to continue. It allows the 14 teams to remain involved for all 6 matches, with the fixtures for the next round depending upon the outcomes of the current round. The format lends itself to an online situation, where venues do not have to be arranged at short notice.
Format
• The 14 teams will be in one group which at the start is roughly seeded from 1 to 14.
• In the first set of matches the top 7 teams will play against teams from the bottom part of the group.
• Subsequent matches will be arranged once results of each round are known and will pair teams with a similar playing record at that time such that teams of a similar standard will play each other.
• As the competition progresses teams can move up the league and can still win the competition even after losing their first match.
• Teams will not play each other more than once.
• Teams will gain 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 bonus point for a defeat by 4 points or fewer.
• A ranking order will be produced at the conclusion of the competition and the team at the top will be the winner.
Organisation
The Competition Secretary is Bill Thomas, the Fixtures Secretary is Cliff Houghton and Brian Thompson is responsible for Zoom Breakout Rooms
• Fixtures for the next set of matches will be emailed out at least one week in advance.
• Questions will be distributed electronically and password protected. This means that the QP needs to download the set from the website and then have the facility to be able to read the questions and to use Zoom.
• Each team will receive their half of the password.
• The HOME team should
o Provide the QP and a friendly as they would face to face.
o Contact the opposition, find out if either of them are able to host the match.
• If they ARE, then the host team should schedule and send details to the other team.
• If they ARENOT, then the home team should contact the Competition Secretary requesting that they use the MQL Breakout Room. Both teams will then receive Joining Details from MQL a day or two before the match.
• The WINNING team is responsible for reporting the score and sending an image of the scoresheet to the Competition Secretary AND the Fixtures Secretary.

• Wed 27 Jan
• Wed 10 Feb
• Wed 3 Mar
• Wed 24 Mar
• Wed 14 Apr
• Wed 5 May
All matches should take place at 9pm with some latitude with the agreement of both teams.

We hope that the teams have enjoyed the competition. The 'Swiss' system appears to have worked well and produced some closely fought matches. Thanks to everyone who took part, to Bill Thomas and Cliff Houghton for their organisation and to Dave Tilley and Derek Moody for setting and verifying the questions.
Let's hope that by the Autumn we might be able to return to the regular competition!
